Literature Review #1

H. Kenny Nienhusser, assistant professor at the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership in the College of Education, Nursing, and Health Professions at the University of Hartford, has written more than one piece that relates to my topic. He does research in the patterns of higher education in different aspects, and therefore I felt he could be a strong resource for my project.
In his article, "Role of Community Colleges in the Implementation of Postsecondary Education Enrollment Policies for Undocumented Students", he explores the affect that community colleges have on an immigrant students education. Some of his keywords include public policy, undocumented immigrants, and student services. All of these words are things that intertwine with the topic.
In his article he writes that about "65,000 undocumented high school seniors graduate from high school in a year"(4). This statistic is mind blowing because that would be the equivalent of Rutgers New Brunswick. Unfortunately many of those 65,000 won't be at place of higher education the following year. He goes on to give reason to why they don't make it; "Given limited financial aid opportunities, this population’s access to postsecondary education is significantly deterred" (7). Because of the legal status, many students are ineligible to receive financial aids through many government based funds. These were base stats that he noted. In the more detail part of his article, he goes on to name solutions to immigrants obstacles. He says that, "College officials noted that it was necessary for them to meet individually with undocumented students in an attempt to best address their needs"(14). Due to the fact that these students are first generation college students, they have no one to look up to for guidance. It is imperative that these counsellors are available to the students for guidance.
Over all, I feel that Nienhusser will be a very important resource to my project. He seems to be very knowledgable in the field. I hope that when I read more into depth in his other articles, I can find more information that will aid my project.
